![]() The story of Abram’s calling is a beautiful one. It reveals God’s desire to bless us and all the ethnicities of the world. On top of that, is the wonderful example Abram gives us of living a life by faith. Confession: Bible passages can bore me. I get this lame idea that I ‘know it all’ or at the very least that I’ve heard it all before. However, this time was different… ![]() I like to think of myself as culturally and socially aware, but just when I think I have left all my gender and societal bias at the door, I realize I forgot to empty one of my pockets. This happened to me recently at a bible study. The passage was John 4:7-26, commonly known as ‘the woman at the well.’ I had heard it before and could pretty much imagine the way it would go… No really. A hobby.
When I think of hobbies I think of old men working on model trains or women selling button earrings on Etsy. Neither of these things speak to my soul, but what if they were on to something. What if the hobby was what made the ordinary man satisfied with an ordinary existence? It was sometime in my early college years when a certain purpose driven idea became extremely prolific. There was a book, and I can’t tell you if the book or the idea came first, but whatever the case it became the dominant view among mainstream Christianity and it went like this...
